Challenges Addressed by SON

The operation and maintenance of radio networks has become increasingly complex and costly for network operators due to the vast number of network elements, various network policies and standards, as well as the existence of multiple equipment vendors within a network.

Self-Organizing Networks (SON) address the majority of issues that arise as a result of above. The main functions of SON are:

  • Self Configuration
  • Self Optimization
  • Self Healing

Based on the NetCM Suite, Rorotika has identified two keys areas where Mobile Operators can use SON services to improve network quality.

  • Neighbour Planning
  • Frequency Planning

Automated Neighbour Relations (ANR)

Rorotika’s ANR is a self-optimization function. It automatically maintains the integrity and effectiveness of neighbour cell lists and neighbour relation tables to increase handover success rates and improve network performance.

In addition, ANR does not require manual intervention, which reduces the costs of network planning and optimization.

Rorotika’s ANR automatically detects missing neighbouring cells, carrier conflicts, and abnormal neighbour cell coverage, and maintains only valid and optimised neighbour relations.

The key inputs to the solution are the CM, PM and FM data available via NetCM. Additionally, Call Trace data and planning data is also taken into account.

Automated Frequency Planning (AFP)

AFP is a feature offered by Rorotika to speed up the work of channel assignment and presents more reliable frequency assignments to sites.

AFP works on complex algorithms whose calculations are based on the interference table data, field strength grids and demand density grids.

Rorotika’s AFP is an immense help to operators, providing guidelines in cases where frequency assignment is required for large and complex networks.
